Day 35 - Into Germany!

4th May 2018

I can't post a Strava link today for reasons I've not yet sorted.  It may be related to the primitively slow phone data speed ? -1G or a corrupted file

We have travelled from Zwinderen to the town of Westerstede in Lower Saxony, a distance of 83.4 miles.  I arrived at the Netherlands/German border at 40 miles into the ride, a nice spot.

The cycle lanes continued although not of the same standard as Belgium or The Netherlands.  I passed through a residential district of a town for several miles on a cycle path shared with pedestrians.  It was a wide pavement and on passing every house the path dipped down for cars to get into drives.  I must have passed over 400 houses and was interested to see a physiotherapy clinic half way along.  They must do good business treating cyclists neck injuries.

Along my route the cycle lane came to an abrupt halt, presumably because of the ditches either side of the road. This then led onto the signs below.

Presumably cyclists aren't considered to be safe in close proximity to German drivers, or might slow them down.

All this made me very grumpy but things soon perked up since the enforced 5 mile detour was actually very pretty.

We are now at very decent campervan stop and it is a sunny evening so a good end to the day.  Tomorrow we head for The Elbe and, hopefully, a ferry.
