Day 42 - Across to Gothenburg
11th May 2018
Today's ride was an A to B affair purely with the purpose of getting to Frederikshavn as simply as possible in order to be in good time for the 2.00pm Stena ferry to Gothenburg. With a decent tail wind things went pretty briskly other than the second puncture in 2 days.
When planning the trip I preferred the simplicity of this route into Sweden, rather than the mix of busy road bridges (not very welcoming when seen on Street View), ferries and islands that the route via Copenhagen would have involved, particularly since we needed a route that suited both a motorhome and a bike. Bikes definitely aren't allowed on "The Bridge". In some ways I now regret the easterly miles gained by non cycling transport, but in others it still makes sense as the more straight forward option. Everything went very smoothly so I think I've convinced myself we made the right route choice.
Gothenburg welcomed us with bright sunshine and it is certainly a very pretty place to approach from the sea with it's multitude of small offshore islands.
Our campsite goes by the not very elegant name of Liseberg Camping Askim Strand. 5 miles south of Gothenberg sitting in a pretty bay beside the beach it will do for us.
We are now going to have a short pause in proceedings. Tomorrow we will explore Gothenberg, and on Sunday we might just play at being beach bums.
All very impressive M&J. The weather looks very kind. We still think Mrs b has the hard job, seeing as how cycling on the flat is so easy!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE TO YOU BOTH E&J xxxx
Thank you E&J and no, I'm not taking the bait ;)
DeletePS.....series 4 The Bridge started tonight!!! We hope you are not the body on it. Went to a new Italian in Chessie with J&S tonight to celebrate their 44th WA. Will replicate on your return next year!!!!
ReplyDeleteSounds great, you're on!
DeleteHi M & J.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you are having a great time. I have spent a little time around Gothenburg, mostly at Monday, AstraZeneca's Swedish site. However I once went to a meeting on one of the offshore islands and got a day of sailing on a 35ft wooden sailing yacht to get back to the hotel near Gothenburg. A beautiful day with perfect weather! I hope your knees and bum hold together as the real challenge of Scandinavia makes itself felt.
Thanks for the blog.
Very best wishes
Chris
Monday -should be Molndal - spell(un)checker!!!
DeleteThanks Chris. I've sailed along the coast north of Gothenburg a couple of times. It is an amazing stretch of coastline full of islands and pretty villages. I'm looking forward to the cycle through Sweden.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on halfway - amazing ride.
