Ribe, probably Europe's most beautiful small town
8th May 2018
A rest day today. We deliberately shortened yesterday's ride a little having read the blurb about Ribe being Europe's most beautiful small town. Now we haven't visited every small town in Europe, but, having spent the day walking around, we reckon it is well up there. It is definitely Denmark's oldest town, being the home of all those Lindisfarne pillagers and looters. They seem such decent people now.
We visited it's very old cathederal, which, over the centuries has had a bit of a tendency to collapse, including on one occasion, in the 13th century, during a Christmas service killing a lot of people. It has an impressive tower which we were able to climb for good views of the city. Twice a day the bells chime an old folk song, "Queen Dagmar has taken to her bed in Ribe".

Just looked at Strava to see your ride yesterday through Denmark. It really is a very flat country. Are the occasional little bumps on the Strava height graphic, the speed bumps as you enter towns? Peter
ReplyDeleteNo, they were my little bunny hops because I was so happy to be off German corrugated cycle ways.
